Tom's Vegetable Garden
June 2018
Return to Flowers 2018

June 5     The garden is watered by soaker hoses and supplemental sprinkling.
The railroad ties provide access and prevent walking on the soil, which would compact it.
Companion planting is utilized with a square yard approach except for the tomatoes and peppers which are in rows.

June 19    There are no weeds and minimal pests. For the most part, everything is organic.

Peppers, Cucumbers & Squash  -  These plus the tomatoes and melons were all started from seed indoors in February.

Peppers, Cucumbers & Squash___Beens, Rutabagas, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Beets, Carrots, Turnips, Radishes,  Parsnips & Onions
Also Swiss Chard. It's time to plant more radishes, lettuce, beets and carrots. I use them to fill in any empty spaces.
We have been having lots of beans, lettuce and other things already. I didn't think to take pictures of them.
Some of the rutabagas have reached 5" in diameter.

Fava Beans - The bean pods grow up vertically and can get up to 8" long. They are the best tasting bean ever when cooked fresh.

Big Jim and 6-4 are my favorite varieties of green chile. These peppers can reach 9" long.

Pimento Pepper - They turn red when ripe.

Pears

Fig

Fig - These get pretty big.

Fig - Black Mission (I think)

New Pinon Cones - Hopefully, we'll have pinon nuts this year. Pinon trees only produce about every 6 years.

Peaches - Early White Giant

Grapes - Black  - I believe the variety is Menuca

Apples - Variety could be Champion or Champagne  I thinned them to at least 2" between apples. I should have done 4".
The tree is loaded . Some branches are already close to the ground.

I use phermone ties and an organic spray to pretty much eliminate the worms.
It's important to pick up and dispose of the apples that drop.

The apricots, cherries and strawberries are finished. I didn't get pictures.
I also missed getting photos of the nectarines and pomegranates. Watch for them next month.

June 28 - Scroll >>>>  The grapes along the wall are green table grapes.
